I wasn’t prepared for the creative outflow of content that was going to stem from writing this week’s article…
But, as I was doing the research for Hug a Thug or Fry a Felon, the idea of justice quickly became a fascinating topic for me. Not only because of its outsized impact on American culture, but because of the way it speaks to the carnal side of humanity.
Between that, and experimenting around with the G-minor chord (which I’ve never really used before) I was able to pull this song out of the ether-
Hope you enjoy!
There Once was a Girl
There once was a man with a gun in his hand and he robbed the Bank of the World. But it all went wrong 'cause there once was a girl. She fell to her knees, begging him "please" Let the other hostages go. But the shot rang out his answer was "no". And on the streets outside the people cried for justice to match the blame for the girl who gave her life for those who never knew her name. Well, there once was a man with a badge and a plan and he vowed to take control. He led the charge, and he found the girl. But, he knew right away when he saw her face that fate had twisted the knife 'cause the girl he found she was his wife. The day of the trial soon came and everybody held their breath. Though the evidence was lacking, the People had a star witness. The man with the badge raised his right hand and he vowed to tell the truth But when the words came out, he said something new. Well the people were stunned when the jury was hung and the judge's hands were tied and the killer walked free because of the lie. And on the streets outside the people cried for justice to match the blame for the girl who gave her life for those who never knew her name Later that night, 'neath a moonless sky, as the killer laid down to rest when the shadows moved, he made one request. He said "I know it was you who bent the truth and that it led to my release. Just answer me this-- why'd you set me free?" Well the man with the badge and the gun in his hand slowly stepped into the light. He bent down to his ear and said "Here's the reason why..." "The last thing she said before she was dead was 'baby don't loose control. Have mercy on him and mercy on his soul.' "But she was better than you and better than me and better than my answer shows." 'Cause as the shot rang out, his answer was "no". And on the streets outside, the people cried for justice to match the blame for the girl who gave her life for those who never even knew her name.
